SAFE-HOUSE GRAPPLING

Judo & Jujutsu at The Technician Dojo is about more than learning how to throw someone or memorizing a collection of techniques. Our classes develop strong fundamentals, practical grappling skill, confidence, physical awareness, and the ability to remain composed and effective against resistance.

Students train in falling safely, throws, takedowns, gripping, clinch work, escapes, pins, positional control, ground grappling, and practical self-defense. As students progress, they learn not only how a technique is performed, but why it works, how to create and use imbalance, and how leverage, timing, positioning, movement, and body mechanics can overcome strength.

Our approach respects the traditions of Judo and classical Jujutsu while maintaining a strong emphasis on functional training. Classes incorporate progressive partner drills, live grappling, situational training, and controlled resistance so students learn to apply their skills against partners who are actively trying to maintain their balance, escape, counter, and improve their own position.

Rank is earned through consistent training, technical improvement, effort, and demonstrated ability. Whether your goal is practical self-defense, fitness, competition, greater confidence on the ground, or a deeper understanding of grappling and martial arts, our Judo & Jujutsu program provides a structured path for continued growth.

Control the balance. Control the position. Develop skill that works against resistance.
Judo & Jujutsu is offered as a supplementary program to our core Karate training.
Students must be actively enrolled in Karate at The Technician Dojo in order to participate in Judo & Jujutsu classes.
Our Judo & Jujutsu classes are structured so beginners can learn at a comfortable pace while developing confidence, coordination, and practical skill over time. New students are first taught how to move safely, how to fall correctly, how to work with a partner, and how to practice techniques with control. From there, training gradually becomes more dynamic as students gain experience and demonstrate that they are ready for increased resistance.

Safety and cooperation are a major part of the learning process. Partners are expected to help each other improve, communicate clearly, and train with control rather than treating every drill like a competition. Instructors closely supervise training, make adjustments for different experience levels, and ensure that students understand both how to apply a technique and how to receive it safely.

Start where you are. Learn at your pace. Build real skill with confidence.

Grappling For Self Defense

Our Judo & Jujutsu program is taught primarily from a self-defense perspective, not a competition ruleset. Sport grappling can be an excellent way to develop timing, conditioning, toughness, and the ability to work against resistance, but a real confrontation does not come with weight classes, referees, padded floors, or rules about what an opponent is allowed to do.

Because of that, we train students to think beyond simply winning a match or scoring a position. Our emphasis is on controlling the situation, protecting yourself from strikes, maintaining awareness of your surroundings, staying mobile when necessary, escaping bad positions, and using throws, takedowns, pins, joint controls, and submissions in ways that make sense for personal protection.

Students still grapple against resisting partners and develop the ability to apply techniques dynamically. The difference is in the objective. We are not training primarily to outscore another grappler—we are training to develop skills that can help someone remain safe, regain control, and escape when a physical confrontation cannot be avoided.

The goal is not simply to become better at grappling. It is to understand how grappling fits into real self-defense.
