Meet the founder of Reiki Mikao Usui: (1865-1926) is credited with founding the practice of Reiki. Usui was a Japanese Buddhist monk who rediscovered the ancient healing practice in the mid-1800s.
How Usui discovered Reiki He described this experience as being attuned to an energy he named Reiki. Usui was a spiritual seeker who meditated and fasted for 21 days on Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain near Kyoto. During his retreat, Usui experienced a spiritual awakening and felt a white light enter his head.
How Reiki spread Usui taught Reiki to over 2,000 people in Japan. One of his students, Chujiro Hayashi, refined Usui's teachings and opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo. Hayashi taught Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman who became a devoted student. Takata brought Reiki to the United States in 1938, opening the first Reiki clinic in the country.
Reiki is a hands-on therapy that is based on the belief that life is dependent on a universal energy. It is used to treat a variety of physical and mental health conditions.
